Why did Mohammed lead armies?

Why do Muslims claim their religion to be one peace, while the founder of their religion declared war on religious grounds. Also, I won't think any less of Islam if it is admitted to be violent. Most governments are responsible for many more deaths than Mohammed, but I don't think any less of the governments. Being a violent religion is not a bad thing. I have no problem with it, so why is it denied?
