How do I test the compression of a '74 Volkswagen?

Any good tester will work.I prefer the ones that screw into the spark plug hole myself.Warm the engine up then pull all the plugs.Get a helper to ist you.Put the tester in a plug hole and turn the engine over about 5 of 6 revolutions with the gas pedal held down to the floor.Write down the reading and go to the next plug hole.Repeat the same process.Your looking for fairly even reading from each cylinder. If you get a low reading from a cylinder squirt about 2 tablespoons of oil in the plug hole and re test it.If the reading goes up it's bad rings. If it stays the same it's a bad valve.
